Jun 27, 2017· Recently, in situ observations of mechanochemical reactions have been achieved by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Solid-state reactions can be directly tracked, revealing phase transitions and other material transformations during synthesis in a ball mill jar. This technique has become increasingly popular in different fields of mechanochemistry.
A new type ofin situ ball millsetup has been developed at the Materials Science beamline (Swiss Light Source, Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland). Its particular geometry, described here in detail, results inXRPDdata displaying significantly lower background and much sharper Bragg peaks, which in turn allow more sophisticated analysis of mechanochemical processes, extending the limits of the technique.
